Project Overview

HSR enjoyed a good working relationship with the school district’s facilities committee and school board through the passage of the referendum, design and construction of their new 540 student Prairie View Elementary School. The school boasts sustainable design elements in not only the 90,000 sf building envelope and systems, but the entire 32 acre site. The building is sited to take advantage of natural day lighting in each of the three academic wings as well as the gymnasium. The commons/cafeteria is the heart of the facility where a center stage and performance area connects the commons area to the gym with the use of two movable walls. The building’s interior colors have four distinct, but unified palettes, that represent not only the prairie theme but also the three academic wings and the common spaces of the building. Integrated technology was an important design element of the facility. Key features include wireless technology, smartboard technology in each classroom, an HVAC building automation system, a lighting control package, proximity readers for building access and perimeter security alerts for maintaining a safe environment for all. Masterplanning will allow for a future 600 student middle school to share bus loading and car drop-off areas.
