Holmen School District Upgrades Open House

Holmen Middle School Ribbon Cutting

The HSR Team was happy to attend the open house event for three Holmen School District schools: Holmen Middle School, Viking Elementary, and Evergreen Elementary. The event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony and allowed visitors to get an inside look at the upgrades to each school. HSR was part of the design team with Nexus Solutions for all of the projects.

The Holmen Middle School addition and renovation project includes a new 23,400 SF footprint for a 2-Story classroom addition on the west side of the current building replacing an aging wing. This project also includes a new 400 SF entry vestibule addition on the east side for bus drop off and events. The entry addition in combination with extensive interior renovations throughout the existing building help to open up existing hallways and simplify wayfinding throughout the building for staff, students and visitors.

Viking Elementary, the district’s oldest school, received a full interior remodel with upgrades to the library, cafeteria, and classrooms. The library was relocated from the center of the school to an exterior wall, introducing natural light to the space. This move also allowed for a new two-story cafeteria space with a grand staircase linking the first and second floors. Classroom wings were remodeled to address sound issues, add STEM and special education spaces, and improve functionality. Additional exterior windows enhanced daylight throughout the building, creating a brighter learning environment.

Evergreen Elementary underwent a full interior remodel that updated classrooms, the library, gymnasiums, and the kitchen area to better support daily operations and student needs. The project also included a 2,400 SF addition that enclosed a new walk-in cooler and freezer and expanded dry storage. A major design focus was improving the flow between floors. This was achieved by removing an existing stair and replacing it with a larger, open grand stair surrounded by new railings on the second floor. A skylight above the stairs now brings natural light into the center of the building, creating a brighter space. Additional special education rooms were added on both levels to better support students among their peers. A new shared STEM lab was also created as a prominent feature near the main lower-level entrance, giving the school a flexible, hands-on learning space for all students.

The open house event was a celebration of improvements to the district that will make an impact for years to come, as well as a testament to the Holmen community’s strong support for expanding education opportunities. Each space was thoughtfully designed to meet the induvial needs of each school, and we are happy to see these updated areas filled with smiling faces.
